Marcus Rashford is now the world’s MOST VALUABLE footballer at £150m, with Erling Haaland second and Kylian Mbappe fifth… but which Premier League stars top the CIES chart in their positions?

  • Marcus Rashford is ranked as the world’s most valuable player in new list
  • CIES Football Observatory values the Manchester United striker at £150million
  • He has jumped to the top as PSG striker Kylian Mbappe drops down the list
  • French star is valued at £135m now as he enters last 18 months of his contract
  • Erling Haaland, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Bruno Fernandes make the top five
  • But Barcelona star Lionel Messi barely scrapes into top 100 as contract runs out

Manchester United star Marcus Rashford is the world’s most valuable player and worth a staggering £150million, according to the latest calculations by CIES Football Observatory.

While Rashford’s value has skyrocketed on account of a free-scoring season for United, Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappe has slumped to fifth place on their list as he enters the last 18 months of his contract.

They value Mbappe at £135m now, below Rashford, Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland (£137.3m), Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold (£137m) and United attacking midfielder Bruno Fernandes (£135.1m).

The CIES survey takes into account recent player performances as well as their age, contract situation and career progression plus their club’s wealth and success.

Rashford’s value has soared this season on account of the 14 goals and seven assists he has racked up for United and the fact Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team can be considered Premier League title contenders for the first time in a while.

The England forward is also young at the age of 23 and is contracted to the Old Trafford club until 2023 with the option of a further year.

France international Mbappe, 22, actually has an identical goals and assists record to Rashford this season but his value has ebbed away because he hasn’t yet committed to a long-term PSG contract.

Haaland, 20, continues to see his stock rise fast after 17 goals for Dortmund so far this season. The Norwegian will be in demand in the summer with Manchester United and Chelsea among a number of heavyweight clubs linked with him.

Alexander-Arnold, 22, is ranked as the world’s most valuable defender off the back of an outstanding couple of years in which Liverpool won first the Champions League and then the Premier League.

Fourth-placed Fernandes, meanwhile, has been a revelation for United since he arrived from Sporting Lisbon almost a year ago, contributing 27 goals and 17 assists in 46 matches to transform United into title challengers.

Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho makes the top 10 despite stuttering form at times this season and is valued at £134m, ahead of Atletico Madrid’s Joao Felix on £127.9m.

Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies, Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling and Chelsea’s Kai Havertz close out the top 10 on the CIES list.

Manchester City’s Ederson Moraes is ranked as the most valuable goalkeeper at £71.9m.

With his Barcelona contract into its final six months, Lionel Messi only just scrapes into the top 100 with an estimated value of £48.8m.

But that’s still higher than Cristiano Ronaldo, 35, ranked 131st at £42.5m because of his age and the relatively short time left on his Juventus contract, which runs until June 2022.

Leeds ‘to reward striker Patrick Bamford with a new contract’ in bid to avoid losing him for nothing http://www.footy.to/2021/01/03/leeds-to-reward-striker-patrick-bamford-with-a-new-contract-in-bid-to-avoid-losing-him-for-nothing/ http://www.footy.to/2021/01/03/leeds-to-reward-striker-patrick-bamford-with-a-new-contract-in-bid-to-avoid-losing-him-for-nothing/#respond Sun, 03 Jan 2021 17:49:18 +0000 http://www.footy.to/?p=31279

Leeds ‘to reward star striker Patrick Bamford with a new contract’ in bid to avoid losing him for nothing next summer after scoring 10 Premier League goals so far this season

  • Patrick Bamford has scored ten for Leeds in an impressive Premier League start
  • The former Chelsea prospect is level on goals with England captain Harry Kane
  • Leeds now reportedly want to tie their star striker down to a long-term contract
  • Bamford is out of contract in 18 months and could depart on a free at that point

Leeds will see off suitors for star striker Patrick Bamford by offering their top scorer a lucrative long-term deal to stay at the club, according to reports.

Ten-goal Bamford has been the talisman for Leeds’ impressive first season back in the Premier League, and his formidable form has alerted rival clubs keen to take advantage when his contract ends in 18 months’ time.

Leeds want to meet Bamford’s advisors to agree a longer contract paying more than his current £35,000-a-week terms, The Sun has claimed.

Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa is thought to be understandably keen to extend Bamford’s contract

The 27-year-old is one of only seven players to have reached double figures in the top flight already, putting him level with prolific Tottenham hitman Harry Kane.

He scored in each of the club’s first three top-flight matches of the campaign, netting at Liverpool on the opening day before finding the net and providing an assist in a 4-3 win over Fulham.

A hat-trick in a 3-0 win at Aston Villa was the highlight of Bamford’s spectacular start to the season, and he has been directly involved in five goals in his last seven matches, scoring three.

Bamford scored 16 goals as Leeds won the Championship last season but there had been doubts over whether the former Nottingham Forest and Chelsea prospect could carry that form into the Premier League.

He showed promise at MK Dons, Derby and Middlesbrough as a youngster, although he failed to score during further brief loan spells with Crystal Palace, Norwich and Burnley during his time at Stamford Bridge.

Speaking about his tally after he scored the only goal of the game against Burnley in the Premier League last Sunday, Bamford said: ‘It’s a good achievement.

‘I don’t stop now – there’s a lot of hard work to be done but it keeps me in touch with the top scorers.

‘It’s a big push but you’ve got to keep pushing and keep your targets high. Last time, I didn’t really play when I was in the Premier League.

‘Attacking-wise, we are brilliant. Defensively, it’s the whole team. It’s a working in progress, isn’t it? We can’t be too unhappy with the start we’ve made.’

There were queries over Bamford's top-flight class although he was prolific at Middlesbrough

Southampton ‘join race to sign Demarai Gray on a free transfer’ from Leicester http://www.footy.to/2021/01/03/southampton-join-race-to-sign-demarai-gray-on-a-free-transfer-from-leicester/ http://www.footy.to/2021/01/03/southampton-join-race-to-sign-demarai-gray-on-a-free-transfer-from-leicester/#respond Sun, 03 Jan 2021 17:39:09 +0000 http://www.footy.to/?p=31264

Southampton ‘join race to sign Demarai Gray on a free transfer’ after the Leicester winger was told he would NOT get a new contract this summer

  • Demarai Gray can speak to foreign clubs now he’s in last six months of his deal
  • Marseille and Monaco are among a host of European clubs that are interested
  • Southampton are keen on bringing Gray in but want to wait until the summer
  • 24-year-old has been told by Leicester he can leave for free at the end of his deal

Southampton are reportedly interested in signing Leicester winger Demarai Gray on a free transfer this summer.

The 24-year-old, who was part of Leicester’s title winning squad in the 2015-16 season, is out of contract at the end of June and has been told by the club he will not be getting a renewal.

According to The Sun, the Saints are set to make a move for Gray, who is now able to speak to foreign clubs about a pre-contract agreement.

There is also interest from other Premier League teams, now that the new rules on transfers following Brexit are being enforced.

Top-flight clubs are limited regarding the amount of overseas players they can sign, they must also have the right amount of ‘homegrown’ players in their squad.

Gray offers a chance to bring in experience and proven quality without a fee to satisfy new regulations.

Southampton are exploring the possibility of taking the winger to St Mary’s, as Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl continues to build an impressive and dynamic squad.

The former Birmingham winger has been made surplus to requirements and has barely featured for Brendan Rodgers’ side this season.

Benfica, Marseille and Monaco are among a host of continental clubs hoping to hold talks with Gray this month.

The 24-year-old’s career thus far will give him enough points to secure a work permit, now that the UK is outside of the EU.

It is believed Gray’s preference is to move abroad, but he could be tempted by a deal to join Southampton, who have made rapid progression under Hasenhuttl’s guidance.

Southampton however are keen to wait until the summer when Gray is a free agent to make their move.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ‘to hold talks with SIX Manchester United players he wants rid of in January’ http://www.footy.to/2021/01/03/ole-gunnar-solskjaer-to-hold-talks-with-six-manchester-united-players-he-wants-rid-of-in-january/ http://www.footy.to/2021/01/03/ole-gunnar-solskjaer-to-hold-talks-with-six-manchester-united-players-he-wants-rid-of-in-january/#respond Sun, 03 Jan 2021 15:21:28 +0000 http://www.footy.to/?p=31246

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ‘to hold talks with SIX Manchester United fringe players he wants rid of in the January window’ with Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Daniel James among those ready to be moved on

  • Man United coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could look to ease out six fringe players
  • The Old Trafford boss is said to be eyeing January exits for the frozen out stars
  • Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Sergio Romero are set to go on loan or permanently
  • Daniel James, Jesse Lingard and Brandon Williams could also be on the way out

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will begin a major clearout this week by speaking to six of his fringe players about loan or permanent moves away from the club, according to reports.

Solskjaer rarely uses several members of his 35-man squad and is keen to create space for more signings at the end of this season.

That will lead to showdown talks this week with the likes of goalkeeper Sergio Romero, who The Sun has reported wants to right the wrong he felt when a deadline day move was dashed last summer.

Defender Phil Jones is also expected to hold talks about his future at Old Trafford

Out-of-favour Marcos Rojo is also believed to be a potential candidate for a switch in January

Out-of-favour Marcos Rojo is also believed to be a potential candidate for a switch in January

Injury-hit defender Phil Jones is a target for struggling West Brom and Marcos Rojo is reportedly wanted by Newcastle, having failed to appear for the club during the current campaign.

Out-of-favour livewire Jesse Lingard had his contract extended by a year earlier this week in a move that is almost certain to have been made with a view to ensuring that United receive a fee for his services.

Former England midfielder Lingard has been restricted to Carabao Cup outings for the joint Premier League leaders this season and has been linked with a surprise move to Tottenham, potentially reuniting him with former United boss Jose Mourinho.

Winger Daniel James scored as he completed his first 90 minutes of the season in last month’s thrilling 6-2 win over Leeds, but has still been a peripheral figure for much of the season and could be set for a loan move to continue his development.

Despite being deployed frequently by Solskjaer last season, 20-year-old left-back Brandon Williams has hardly featured since the start of the 2020/21 campaign and has been linked with Southampton, Newcastle and Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen.

The prospect described the year ahead as a ‘mystery’ on Instagram and is also set for talks with Solskjaer about a possible move.

Solskjaer confirmed after United’s Premier League win over Aston Villa on Friday that Atalanta winger Amad Diallo will be joining the first-team squad in January.

He added: ‘We’re always working long-term – that’s the big thing. We have targets we need, long-term, for the club.’

Tottenham ‘open talks with Harry Kane over a new contract’ as Jose Mourinho looks to keep star striker amid interest from Manchester City and Mauricio Pochettino at PSG

  • Harry Kane ‘has opened initial talks’ with Tottenham Hotspur over a new deal
  • England captain, 27, is attracting interest from Manchester City and PSG
  • Kane is currently contracted to Spurs until 2024 having signed the deal in 2018
  • He is reportedly keen to stay as long as Jose Mourinho’s side are competitive

Tottenham Hotspur ‘have opened talks with Harry Kane over a new contract’ amid interest in the England captain from Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain.

The 27-year-old striker is contract to Spurs until the summer of 2024, having agreed his last contract with the club back in 2018.

But, according to The Independent, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is eager to keep his star man as happy as possible amid interest from elsewhere and initial dialogue has started.

Any new deal would undoubtedly mean an increase on Kane’s current £200,000-a-week wage.

Reports last week suggested that City have identified Kane as their successor to Sergio Aguero and are preparing a £90million offer in the summer.

Former Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino could also be interested in a reunion with Kane following his appointment at PSG – especially if Kylian Mbappe moves to Real Madrid.

The Independent report that Kane is happy to remain at Spurs as long as they are competing for the silverware that has so far eluded him during a free-scoring career.

Jose Mourinho is trying to end Spurs’ trophy drought and they have a Carabao Cup semi-final against Championship club Brentford this week.

Kane’s game has also evolved under Mourinho, with the striker forming a superb understanding with Son Heung-min and showing more willingness to drop deeper and link the play during counter-attacks.

It has led to a phenomenal return of 17 goals and 14 assists in all competitions for Spurs so far this season.

Kane added to his tally with a penalty in Saturday’s 3-0 home win over Leeds United and then set up Son to score the second goal.

Arsene Wenger says he will RETURN to Arsenal if former club want him to replace Arteta http://www.footy.to/2021/01/03/arsene-wenger-says-he-will-return-to-arsenal-if-former-club-want-him-to-replace-arteta/ http://www.footy.to/2021/01/03/arsene-wenger-says-he-will-return-to-arsenal-if-former-club-want-him-to-replace-arteta/#respond Sat, 02 Jan 2021 23:30:18 +0000 http://www.footy.to/?p=31210

Arsene Wenger says he would RETURN to Arsenal if struggling former club need him and insists ‘time is a good doctor’… but expects Mikel Arteta to remain in charge

  • Arsene Wenger will not rule out an incredible return to save Arsenal’s season
  • Two recent wins have eased pressure on Mikel Arteta but the team are still 13th
  • Under Arteta, Gunners made their worst ever start to a Premier League season
  • Wenger says ‘time is a good doctor’ but does not expect Arteta to be fired

Arsene Wenger will not rule out a sensational return to Arsenal to save the faltering season of his beloved former club, should the struggles under Mikel Arteta continue.

With the Spaniard at the helm Arsenal have recorded their worst ever start to a Premier League season, and sit in 13th place on 20 points after 16 matches played.

Recent victories over Chelsea and Brighton have managed to ease some pressure on Arteta’s woefully misfiring side, but now Wenger has astonishingly claimed he would return to the dug-out if the north London club decided they needed him.

Arsene Wenger has admitted he would be willing to make a sensation return to save Arsenal

Speaking this week, Wenger told the Men In Blazers podcast: ‘If I’m needed, I will help them. But I don’t expect that, no.”

Wenger departed Arsenal in May 2018 following a glorious 22-year tenure which ended in controversial fashion.

Large parts of the Emirates had turned on Wenger at the end of his time with the club, forcing the Frenchman to call time on his position as manager earlier than planned.

Wenger had managed to consistently guide the Gunners to a Champions League finish, despite working on an inferior budget to his rivals, but now the 71-year-old admits time can be a healer.

Wenger has not returned to football management since leaving the Gunners but took up a role with FIFA

Under Mikel Arteta, Arsenal made their worst ever start to a Premier League season, while Wenger has not returned to the dug-out since leaving the Gunners in May 2018

‘I wish nothing, Time is a good doctor, you know,’ Wenger added cryptically.

Wenger has not returned to the dug-out since leaving Arsenal two years ago, though did take up a role with FIFA as the football body’s new chief of global football development.

Wenger has since revealed he has turned down several jobs to return to football management, including two requests from west London club Fulham.

It was also widely reported in the French media that Wenger also declined the opportunity to take over at Barcelona, following the sacking of Quique Setien.

Back in October Wenger spoke to TalkSport and admitted Arteta was ‘lucky’ to have landed a big job straight away despite his limited managerial experience, before insisting the Gunners are financially stocked to win the league.

Wenger said: ‘He’s lucky that straight away he got into a big club, in a position where you normally have to work ten years to get in that position.

‘But because he played for the club and was a good player, he got his chance. I wish him well.

‘I left the club in a position for my followers to do better and the club now has the financial resources to win the championship.

‘Mikel had passion for the game and big motivation, and good focus and a desire to do well. You could see the ingredients there, and he had a grip and influence on the other players.’
