Liverpool ‘are pushing hard’ to beat Real Madrid to David Alaba on a free transfer from Bayern Munich… but the defender’s ‘dream’ is to join the Spanish side at the end of the season

  • David Alaba’s Bayern Munich contract expires at the end of the current season
  • The 28-year-old defender is of interest to Liverpool and giants Real Madrid
  • It is believed that Austria international Alaba would prefer to join the LaLiga side

Liverpool have joined Real Madrid in the battle to swoop for Bayern Munich defender David Alaba on a free transfer at the end of the season.

According to The Guardian, Jurgen Klopp’s outfit are ‘pushing hard’ to land the 28-year-old, whose contract expires once the 2020-21 season ends.

But the publication adds that it has been a long held dream of Alaba’s to one day play for Real Madrid and the Spanish giants are very much the favourites for his signature as things stand.

David Alaba is wanted by both Real Madrid and Liverpool with his contract running out

The 28-year-old Austria international, who can play as a centre back or a left back, has been playing for Bayern since 2008.

In his 12 years at the club, Alaba has won nine Bundesliga titles and the Champions League twice, including last season.

He is not believed to be pushing for a January departure and is happy to see out his contract with Hansi Flick’s side, who sit at the summit of the Bundesliga standings.

Klopp and Liverpool are believed to be planning for the summer transfer window and are not expected to be too busy in January.

That comes despite Liverpool’s defensive injury issues piling up, with his three established central defenders sidelined through injury in Joe Gomez, Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip.

Liverpool were beaten 1-0 by Southampton in the Premier League on Monday night, where Klopp was forced to play two midfielders in central defence in Fabinho and Jordan Henderson.

Liverpool return to action on Friday when they meet Aston Villa in the FA Cup.

Borussia Dortmund 2-0 Wolfsburg: Jadon Sancho scores his first goal of the season at the TWELFTH attempt and sets up Manuel Akanji’s opener as BVB start the year with a win to move up to fourth in the Bundesliga

  • Borussia Dortmund leapfrogged Wolfsburg by beating their visitors on Sunday
  • Manuel Akanji headed the 66th-minute opener in a tightly-contested encounter
  • England livewire Jadon Sancho sealed the victory with a goal in stoppage time
  • Midfielder Yannick Gerhardt struck the post early on for high-flying Wolfsburg

England winger Jadon Sancho set up the opener and scored his first goal of the season as Borussia Dortmund edged past Wolfsburg and moved up to fourth in the Bundesliga on Sunday.

Manuel Akanji headed home Sancho’s corner in the 66th minute before the livewire’s last-gasp strike sealed victory in Dortmund’s first match of 2021.

Wolfsburg had frequently threatened to at least retain the two-point lead they held over Dortmund before the start of play.

Yannick Gerhardt almost opened the scoring as the high-flying visitors dominated the opening ten minutes of the match, although Dortmund top scorer Erling Haaland threatened more as the half went on and Sancho spurned a fine chance in front of goal just before the break.

Haaland, who was later substituted, was denied by goalkeeper Koen Casteels when he was clean through on goal eight minutes after the break.

Stuttgart keeper Gregor Kobel pulls off astonishing penalty save with his foot against Leipzig http://www.footy.to/2021/01/03/stuttgart-keeper-gregor-kobel-pulls-off-astonishing-penalty-save-with-his-foot-against-leipzig/ http://www.footy.to/2021/01/03/stuttgart-keeper-gregor-kobel-pulls-off-astonishing-penalty-save-with-his-foot-against-leipzig/#respond Sun, 03 Jan 2021 15:27:11 +0000 http://www.footy.to/?p=31255

Das Boot! Stuttgart’s keeper Gregor Kobel pulls off an astonishing penalty save with his FOOT to deny Leipzig’s Emil Forsberg

  • Stuttgart’s Gregor Kobel pulled off brilliant penalty save to deny Emil Forsberg
  • In real time, it looked like Forsberg’s powerful penalty was stopped by a hand
  • But slow motion replays showed Kobel had blocked it with his right boot
  • Swiss keeper Kobel reacted with a couple of understated fist bumps
  • But he couldn’t keep Leipzig from winning Saturday’s Bundesliga game 1-0

Stuttgart goalkeeper Gregor Kobel pulled off the penalty save of the season – and followed it up with a brilliantly stoic celebration as if it was an everyday occurrence.

RB Leipzig forward Emil Forsberg drilled his spot-kick with formidable power down the middle and such was the speed, it first appeared Kobel had pushed it onto the bar with his hands.

But slow-motion replays showed he’d actually kicked the ball onto the woodwork with a his right boot as he dived away from the shot.

The 23-year-old Swiss stopper marked his wonder save with an understated celebration, simply offering a couple of his team-mates fist bumps.

Forsberg had won the 22nd-minute penalty in Saturday night’s Bundesliga clash at the Mercedes-Benz Arena after being felled by Pascal Stenzel.

But he couldn’t capitalise as Kobel pulled off the miraculous stop with his foot.

However, Leipzig did eventually emerge victorious with Dani Olmo grabbing the winner midway through the second-half to send them a point clear of Bayern Munich at the top of the table.

Bayern have the opportunity to respond when they host Mainz on Sunday afternoon in what is developing into an exciting title race.

The German season would traditionally be on its winter break for much of January but the truncated schedule amid the Covid-19 pandemic meant an early return from the Christmas pause.

It was the sixth penalty Kobel has faced in the Bundesliga and the second he has saved. Stuttgart, who were promoted back into the Bundesliga last season, are currently 11th despite Saturday’s loss.

Kobel, a former Switzerland under-21 international, came through the youth ranks at Grasshoppers Zurich before moving to German club Hoffenheim, first on loan and then permanently in 2016.

He only made six first-team appearances for them, however, and after a loan spell with Stuttgart in the second tier in 2019-20, he signed for the club permanently back in July.

Man United ‘believe they dodged a bullet’ by not signing Jadon Sancho for £108m last summer and ‘are rethinking their pursuit’ of the England star… and Dortmund team-mate Erling Haaland is the target Solskjaer REALLY wants

  • Manchester United were heavily linked with Jadon Sancho last summer
  • But Ed Woodward refused to pay Borussia Dortmund’s £108million asking price
  • Sancho’s form has since dropped off in the Bundesliga with Dortmund in sixth
  • Reports suggest United have cooled their interest in 20-year-old England star
  • However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer remains keen on striker Erling Haaland

Manchester United ‘believe they have dodged a bullet’ by not signing Jadon Sancho last summer and ‘are reconsidering their pursuit’ of the England star.

Borussia Dortmund winger Sancho was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looked to add some X-factor to his team.

But his form has slumped this season and, according to the Sunday Mirror, the United hierarchy are thinking twice about whether to pursue him again this summer.

Manchester United have reportedly cooled their interest in Borussia Dortmund star Sancho

Solskjaer’s men are performing pretty well even without Sancho and are joint-top of the Premier League table with Liverpool.

While their interest in Sancho, 20, has reportedly now cooled, they remain interested in his Dortmund team-mate Erling Haaland.

Norwegian boss Solskjaer knows Haaland and his family from their time together at his former club Molde and United made an effort to sign him from Red Bull Salzburg before he joined Dortmund.

The 20-year-old striker has since scored 33 goals in 32 appearances for Dortmund, underlining the star quality that has also attracted the attention of Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid.

But the Mirror report that Solskjaer remains keen on Haaland and United could make their move during the summer window.

Reports have suggested the striker has a £70m release clause to be activated before the end of next season.

One potential stumbling block is that United would have to deal with agent Mino Raiola in order to complete any deal for him.

Raiola is also Paul Pogba’s agent and has agitated for the French midfield to leave Old Trafford earlier this season.

However, United would be prepared to deal with Raiola in order to land Haaland.

United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward refused to meet Dortmund’s £108million asking price for Sancho with finances strained amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

This decision was criticised at the time but Sancho has failed to scale the same heights for Dortmund this season as last.

They sit sixth in the Bundesliga table with Lucien Favre sacked as manager in mid-December. Sancho has yet to score a Bundesliga goal this season, though he has netted in the Champions League and German Cup.

Dortmund’s sporting director Michael Zorc has expressed fears that Sancho has been distracted by United’s interest.
