"What a horrible start for Matthijs de Ligt. Oh, oh, this is the biggest nightmare."
NOS commentator Jeroen Elshoff sees it go wrong after five minutes. A long, slow, at first sight hopeless ball from the back of Bulgaria is completely misjudged by De Ligt. He misses the ball, so that the quick striker Spas Delev has the chance to tap the ball past Jasper Cillessen. In an attempt to correct his mistake, De Ligt stumbles over his own goalkeeper.
"Delev takes his chance again. It's twenty terrible minutes for the Dutch national team in Sofia."
In Elshoff's voice, unbelief now sounds. The first half is not halfway or it is already 2-0. Again, De Ligt is not looking well. First the Ajax defender does not head a long ball far enough away, after which he covers way too wide. Delev can take on, turn and calmly enter from about 20 meters.
"Look at these faces. It's all misery."
Towards the end of the match, the Bulgarian director shows the bank of Orange, with in addition Blind assistants Fred Grim and Frans Hoek. One has his arms crossed, the other looks down at an angle. Blind scratches behind his ear. De Ligt has been sitting on the couch for a while. Lazio defender Hoedt relieved him after the break. Or rather: redeemed.
