Juventus ‘do not want to let Adrien Rabiot leave for Arsenal in January’ despite just seven starts this season

  • Adrian Rabiot signed for Juventus on a free transfer but has made seven starts
  • The midfielder is said to be interesting Arsenal, who are lacking in midfield
  • But the Old Lady are believed to be holding firm to keep the Frenchman in Turin

Juventus will hang on to midfielder Adrian Rabiot amid speculation linking him to Arsenal, reports in Italy claim.

The France international has been linked to the Gunners with new manager Mikel Arteta reportedly seeking reinforcements to bolster his midfield.

Rabiot looked a shrewd acquisition after signing for Juventus on a free transfer from PSG this summer, but he has struggled to nail down a first-team place under Maurizio Sarri – playing less minutes than reserve keeper Gianluigi Buffon.

With Arsenal lacking vision and creativity in their own midfield, it had been speculated that Rabiot could come in on a loan deal until the end of the season with an option to buy if the move worked out.

But Juventus will block any approach for the player in January – even a loan bid – to keep him as a squad player and maintain their depth, according to Sport Mediaset.

After becoming sidelined at the club, Rabiot has started the last three of the last four games for Juve, with the Old Lady winning all three of those matches.

Rabiot is having to compete with an array of talented midfield stars at the club, including Miralem Pjanic, Blaise Matuidi, Aaron Ramsey, Rodrigo Bentancur and Emre Can, so he can expect a fair amount of rotation as the season goes on.

But Can has also been linked with an exit, so Sarri might want to keep hold of Rabiot in case the German departs, as the ex-Liverpool man is rumoured to be heading to PSG.

Former Chelsea boss Sarri has spoken in the past about Rabiot’s struggles to gel into the team, calling him ‘introverted’.

‘He has struggled to settle into our football, but that is normal,’ he said. He is also quite introverted, which doesn’t help him to settle.’

A loan move for Rabiot would have been seen as ideal for Arsenal, as their midfield is seen as a weak spot.

An exit for Granit Xhaka looks likely with Hertha Berlin confident of securing his signature by the end of next week, while the likes of Lucas Torreira and Mesut Ozil have failed to find their groove this season.

Arteta is however not ready to give up on the potential deal for Rabiot, who has also been linked to the Gunners’ rivals Tottenham in recent years.

RB Salzburg could lose ANOTHER star as Wolves hope to sign £19m-rated forward Hwang Hee-Chan in January

  • Wolves are interested in signing Salzburg forward Hwang Hee-Chan in January
  • The Korean started his career with the Austrian outfit and has proven to be lethal
  • He scored three goals in Champions League group stage and is valued at £19m
  • Another star could be leaving Salzburg after Takumi Minamino joined Liverpool

Wolves are continuing discussions over a possible £19million deal for Red Bull Salzburg striker Hwang Hee-Chan.

Sporting director Kevin Thelwell has followed the South Korean’s progress in the Champions League this season and is keen to strike a deal with other clubs also showing interest in the 23-year-old.

A deal could also pave the way for Wolves’ Patrick Cutrone to return to Italy with Fiorentina keen.

Wolves defender Jesus Vallejo may return to Real Madrid next month as they want him to play more frequently. Vallejo has made just seven appearances this season.

Wolves scouts have watched over Hwang a number of times in December and the club are keen to bring him in to add more firepower to their squad.

But Nuno Espirito Santo’s men will likely face stiff competition for his signature as teams in Germany, Spain are queuing up to recruit him.

A versatile forward, Hwang can play anywhere across the front three and has scored nine goals in 22 appearances this season.

The 23-year-old began his professional career with Salzburg, joining in 2015, and has since played 108 times for the first team – netting 38 goals.

He is also a South Korean international alongside Son Heung-Min, and has picked up 32 caps since making his debut in 2016.

The forward has caught the eye in the Champions League this season as he starred in an attacking trio with Takumi Minamino and Erling Haaland – with all three finding the net in a 4-3 loss against Liverpool at Anfield.

Hwang, who has three strikes in the group stages, opened Salzburg’s account against the Reds as he made it 3-1 before goals from Minamino and Haaland brought them level – with Mo Salah breaking their hearts by scoring a winner.

His signing would provide a boost to Wolves, who a flying high in the Premier League after beating Manchester City 3-2 – rising to fifth in the league.

The team don’t exactly need help in the goalscoring department – Raul Jimenez is leading the way with 11 strikes and Diogo Jota has 6 – but the presence of Hwang would make Wolves more dangerous and create more chances.

‘We sometimes get a little bit demoralised and depressed looking at how are we going to solve this’: Roy Hodgson urges Crystal Palace to splash the cash in January as injury crisis worsens over Christmas period

  • An injury crisis over Christmas has left Crystal Palace’s squad looking sparse
  • Palace lost Christian Benteke and Patrick van Aanholt in the space of two days
  • Roy Hodgson says signings are essential if his side are to avoid dip in form
  • Hodgson also joked that he hasn’t forgiven Danny Ings for rejecting Palace

Roy Hodgson admits Crystal Palace’s worsening injury woes have left him ‘a little bit demoralised and depressed’ over the festive period.

Palace were already without a number of first-team players before Christian Benteke injured himself on Christmas Day and Patrick van Aanholt had to be taken off against West Ham on Boxing Day.

Jordan Ayew’s last-minute winner took them into the top half but ahead of the January transfer window, but Hodgson fears his side could slip down the table if they don’t bring in reinforcements in January.

‘I think it’s affecting myself and the coaching staff more than the players, they seem to have an incredible resilience for getting on, we’re the ones who sometimes get a little bit demoralised and depressed looking at how are we going to solve this problem,’ he said at a press conference on Friday.

‘Luckily that’s not filtering down to the players, they’re getting on with it, but I think they understand it’s going to be of vital importance if we’re going to have a decent second half of the season and achieve our goal because this is a dangerous league.

‘You can slip so very quickly; a good run can certainly become two defeats and a third defeat in a game that should’ve ended a draw, then you lose the next one and all of a sudden you’re looking over your shoulder ‘are we going to get relegated?’ and unfortunately you can.’

Palace face Southampton on Saturday and Hodgson joked that he still hasn’t come to terms with Danny Ings’ decision to spurn his advances and join the Saints on a permanent deal in the summer.

‘I don’t know if I forgive him for not coming to us when we wanted to sign him and he went to Southampton instead I’ve still got a bit of a bee in my bonnet about that one,’ he added.

‘I’ve always admired Danny as a player, he is what you’d call a natural goalscorer, his movement in and around the penalty area is very good when a chance comes his way he’s got the technique to take the chance.

‘Added to that he’s a hard worker so what got him selected for England and playing in Lithuania was those qualities, which we admire, and [it was] very unlucky of course he picked up that nasty injury very soon after that game that ruled him out for over a month to come.’

Jose Mourinho plots fresh Lille raid as he ‘lines up January move for £50m-rated midfielder Boubakary Soumare’

  • Jose Mourinho took two of Lille’s coaches to Tottenham when he become boss
  • He is now reportedly considering returning to the French club for a player
  • He could move for midfielder Boubakary Soumare in the transfer window

Jose Mourinho is preparing yet another raid on French club Lille – this time for £50million-rated midfielder Boubakary Soumare.

When Mourinho arrived at Tottenham in November, he poached two members of the French side’s coaching staff in No 2 Joao Sacramento and goalkeeping coach Nuno Santos.

Now, according to L’Equipe, Mourinho will move for the 20-year-old Frenchman next month.

Soumare has played 23 times in all competitions for Lille, who are fourth in Ligue 1, this season but has not scored. He plays the role of a midfield anchor, rather than appearing in an advanced position.

Lille manager Christophe Gaultier was unimpressed with Mourinho taking two members of his backroom team.

‘Everyone has their own way of doing things,’ Galtier said in the first press conference he had after the exits, before adopting an ironic tone. ‘But it’s really classy. Really classy to act like that.’

Mourinho has overall enjoyed a positive start since becoming Tottenham manager but endured a disappointing 2-0 defeat by former club Chelsea on Sunday.

The defeat means his team are seventh in the Premier League with 26 points and are now six behind Chelsea, who occupy fourth.

They are next in action on Boxing Day, when they take on Brighton in the early kick-off at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium.

‘Tis the festive season which means Premier League managers are making a January transfer wish list, checking it twice and are going to find out whether their board will be naughty or nice.

Some of the clubs will be scouting around the Championship for their next big move to bolster their squad ahead of the second half of the season and there is plenty of talent to acquire.

Whether it’s in an attempt to avoid relegation, push on for European qualification, or even win the league, there has never been more exciting talent in England’s second division than this season.

From Leeds United to Hull City, the Championship has turned into a melting pot for young, homegrown stars who have their eyes set on the top-flight.

Here Sportsmail look at the Championship stars that could be on their way to the Premier League this January…

Jarrod Bowen (Hull City)

Jarrod Bowen has been the brightest star in a rather average Hull City side this season

The Hull City winger has embodied everything that a talisman should be this season. He has scored 16 goals along with five assists and would be a valuable asset to plenty of Premier League outfits. This season has seen Bowen go up another level; showcasing his ability to breeze past defenders and score from anywhere on the pitch.

Assists: 10

There are a wealth of clubs said to be interested in the 23-year-old such as Arsenal, Tottenham, Leicester, Burnley, Aston Villa and Sheffield United to name a few.

His contract is up in the summer, but Hull have an option to trigger a 12-month extension. He was also offered a three-year deal back in October but is still yet to sign it. Could he have his eyes set on the top-flight?

Eberechi Eze (QPR)

Eberechi Eze has been linked with Tottenham but things have gone quiet for the QPR man

Eberechi Eze has been linked with Tottenham but things have gone quiet for the QPR man

The QPR trickster has made a meteoric rise through the EFL ranks since his loan spell at Wycombe Wanderers. Much like many others on this list, he possesses a star quality and thew ability to get fans off their seats. He has nine goals this term and has been linked with Tottenham, but that trail may have gone cold since Mauricio Pochettino’s sacking in November. Chelsea are another club sniffing around Eze and with their transfer ban now lifted, they could take the plunge.

Said Benrahma (Brentford)

Said Benrahma is possibly the best dribbler in the league and is attracting some big clubs

Said Benrahma is possibly the best dribbler in the league and is attracting some big clubs

‘Said Benrahma is too good for the Championship’ is the response you’ll get when asking any avid Championship follower about the Algerian – and they aren’t wrong. Benrahma is a tricky customer for any defence and is potentially the best dribbler in the league. He operates perfectly in the Brentford side, with many of their attacks always starting (and often finishing) with a magical moment from Said.

Said Benrahma Championship stats

Now, a January transfer has been and will continue to be talked about, however, with Brentford having a real chance at the play-offs, Benrahma could remain loyal to the Bees even if a tempting offer to made. Like many on this list, Aston Villa are leading the race for his signature – but, reports have suggested Chelsea are also interested.

If he doesn’t move this winter, he will be a Premier League player by August.

Ollie Watkins (Brentford)

Brentford's Ollie Watkins has adapted perfectly from a winger to a central striker in the league

Brentford’s other piece of hot property – Ollie Watkins. The striker is the leading talisman for the Bees and is also in the race for the league’s golden boot. Watkins has played in multiple different roles across the front three at Brentford; an asset which would make him valuable to plenty of mid table Premier League sides.

Sheffield United are reportedly lining up a £20million bid for him as he would add a much needed spark of pace and composure to their striking options; with Oli McBurnie and David McGoldrick yet to fire on all cylinders.

He will not be cheap but at 23 years old, Watkins has plenty of seasons ahead of him to improve on the biggest stage.

Kalvin Phillips (Leeds United)

Leeds United's Kalvin Phillips has been superb in the middle of the park under Marcelo Bielsa

Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips has been superb in the middle of the park under Marcelo Bielsa

Kalvin Phillips is the glue holding Leeds United together. He anchors the midfield showcasing quality beyond his years and that has not gone unnoticed. Whether he leaves this January is yet to be seen, with the Whites seemingly storming to automatic promotion.

There are several clubs interested in Phillips and his price tag reportedly keeps rising. Arsenal, Manchester United and Aston Villa are all linked with the 24-year-old whose price tag could rise to as high as £40million.

Joe Lolley (Nottingham Forest)

Joe Lolley is a favourite at the City Ground but has cut a frustrated figure under Sabri Lamouchi

Joe Lolley is a favourite at the City Ground but has cut a frustrated figure under Sabri Lamouchi

Joe Lolley is a favourite with the Nottingham Forest fans and a January move would maybe be unrealistic, but not impossible. The attacker has been struggling lately and is not being used to his full potential under Sabri Lamouchi, but his talent to create and score is undeniable. At 27-years old will be wanting to play Premier League football sooner rather than later.

Lolley has been linked with boyhood club Aston Villa in the past and with many predicting Forest to have a busy January, cashing in may be an option.

Andre Ayew (Swansea City)

Andre Ayew had a summer of speculation but committed to Swansea and impressed so far

The Ghanian international has gone through a strange couple seasons after his time at West Ham United came to an end. However, he committed to Steve Cooper’s Swansea City, for now, but it is no secret that his wages are a hefty fee for the Swans to pay.

Andre Ayew’s International career

Appearances: 86

Goals: 15

Debut: August 2007

Ayew has remained professional during this campaign; busting his gut to work hard for the team and is often the catalyst for Swansea’s attacks with eight goals and four assists thus far.

The club and player have both kept cards close to their chest in terms of a winter move but there will be interest in him.

With foreign clubs potentially looking into the attacker, Premier League sides may have competition but they’ll know Swansea are known for cashing in on their valuable players.

Aleksander Mitrovic (Fulham)

Aleksander Mitrovic has been in devastating form for club and country since the summer

Aleksander Mitrovic has been in devastating form for club and country since the summer

Aleksander Mitrovic has been incredibly clinical at the spearhead of the Fulham’s attack this season. The Serbian, who has 17 goals this season, has already proven he can produce moments of quality in the Premier League and plenty of a struggling clubs could do with his physical presence up front.

Fulham were one of the favourites for automatic promotion at the start of the season, but now the play-offs seem like a more realistic target. Aston Villa are heavily interested in the 25-year-old, with many of their fans uninspired with summer signing Wesley.

Joe Allen (Stoke City)

Joe Allen would be a relatively cheap and safe option for club’s in need of a midfielder. He’s gone steady this season at the bet365 stadium, but his campaign has been drowned out by the painful moans of the Stoke faithful as they are enduring a poor season near the bottom of the table.

Allen, 29, has been sublime in a Welsh shirt as he helped Ryan Giggs’ men qualify for Euro 2020. Some Premier League clubs closer to the bottom of the table are light on central midfielders – especially box-to-box – and could acquire Allen’s services for a rather low fee.

Interest has been reported by West Ham, Wolves, Watford, Newcastle United and Southampton.

Ben White (Leeds United)

Leeds United’s Ben White could have a interesting January as he is currently on loan

Ben White has been the best centre-back in the Championship this season. Period. He is a modern-day styled defender, who can sweep across the back line, win a header and also kick start an attack. However, White could have an interesting January ahead as his situation is a little different to others on this list.

White is on loan from Premier League club Brighton but has attracted interest from Chelsea, who can now spend money in January. Brighton have been clear they wish for his loan to run until the end of the season – but Chelsea are lining up a £25million bid.

This could get interesting.

‘Sooner or later, we need to get some people in to help out’: Roy Hodgson wants ‘four or five’ new players at Crystal Palace in the transfer window

  • Crystal Palace sealed last minute win over West Ham to climb into table’s top half
  • Eagles have now won three of their last six matches, losing just once in that run
  • But Roy Hodgson insists his side have been performing ‘miracles’ this term
  • At the halfway point Palace are eight points clear of the bottom three

Roy Hodgson has pleaded with the Crystal Palace board to back him with new signings in the January transfer window following a late win over West Ham United.

The Eagles boss has seen his side fighting against relegation at times this term but insists his team are relying on ‘miracles’, which is keeping their heads above water.

‘We’ve got to try to stay in the league,’ Hodgson said. ‘We’ve got such a small squad and we can’t keep asking for miracles. If we can get through Christmas and the chairman can give me four or five new players than we can do extremely well.

‘We’ve talked about it for a long time but maybe this is the transfer window where we can get them. Sooner or later, we need to get some people in who can help us out.

‘That’s under discussion at the moment. I’d like, if I’m going to stay here, not to find the situation I’m in at the moment, where I have to put the emphasis on so few players to keep our heads above water.

‘We really do need some help. I’m old, aren’t I? The TV love to talk about it but I tend not to think, every morning when I wake up, that I’m old. When the time comes, I’ll miss my players and I’ll miss my coaching staff.’

It looked like being a torrid afternoon for the Eagles when they fell behind to a Robert Snodgrass strike in the second half at Selhurst Park.

But a good response from Hodgson’s side saw Cheikhou Kouyate grab an equaliser, before Jordan Ayew scored a stunning solo effort in the final minute to grab a crucial three points against a struggling Hammers outfit.

Three wins in their last six games have seen Palace reach the halfway point of the campaign inside the top 10, but they will be aware that at just eight points off the bottom three they are still far from safe.
