Toothless Tottenham have failed to score in their two games since Harry Kane’s injury…Jose Mourinho MUST sign a striker in the January transfer window or Spurs will pay the price

  • Tottenham have lacked cutting edge since Harry Kane’s hamstring injury
  • Spurs missed a host of good chances in Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Watford
  • Tottenham have paid price for failing to replace Fernando Llorente last summer
  • Spurs will find it difficult to sign a top striker in the January transfer window

No Premier League goals in their two games since Harry Kane was ruled out for the majority of the season. That’s worth repeating. Zero. None. Nil.

Whether Kane recovers from his hamstring injury in time for Euro 2020 has been a pertinent topic this week. Everyone’s got an opinion, it seems.

But that is the least of Jose Mourinho’s worries. His only concern is how his team will cope for at least three months without, unarguably, their most important footballer.

Tottenham are hamstrung without their talismanic striker. This toothless display against relegation threatened Watford illustrated how painstaking life might be without Kane.

When Dele Alli released Lucas Moura through on goal in the first half, there was never the sense the Brazilian would finish. He didn’t. Put Kane in that scenario…well, you know the rest. That’s the difference.

On paper Alli, Moura and Heung-min Son should have enough to ensure Tottenham can cope without Kane. But, put bluntly, they aren’t Kane.

Unfortunately for Mourinho, there’s no escaping that fact no matter how much he may try to block it out.

Mourinho, of course, is blameless for the majority of the mess Tottenham find themselves in due to Kane’s prolonged absence.

The decision not to replace the Fernando Llorente last summer has returned to bite Tottenham in the backside. What makes it even more unforgiving is that the club knew his contact was up last summer and all the indications were that he was unlikely to stay.

That lack of planning isn’t Mourinho’s fault. Nonetheless, the Tottenham manager must find a solution to the lack of firepower – and swiftly.

That will be easier said than done, of course. Recruiting a new striker is an arduous task at the best of times.

Add to the pot that it’s January, a month it’s notoriously difficult to sign players with clubs, understandably, reluctant to sell their better players.

Equally, convincing a top level centre-forward to join when they know full well they’ll be back on the bench once Kane’s fit is a job in itself. It’s a problem Tottenham have found difficult to overcome in recent seasons.

But this isn’t a time for excuses from the Tottenham board. It’s a time to be bold in the transfer market. Their season depends on it.
