PLAYER RATINGS: Ben Davies’ costly error capped a miserable night as classy Timo Werner bagged crucial away goal for Leipzig at Tottenham

  • Ben Davies offered no threat going forward and gave away a crucial penalty
  • Goalkeeper Hugo Lloris kept Spurs in the tie with several important saves
  • Giovani Lo Celso provided the creativity for Spurs, driving his side forward
  • Timo Werner was the key threat for the visitors and coolly netted his penalty

Timo Werner’s second-half penalty gave a dominant RB Leipzig a deserved 1-0 victory at Tottenham Hotspur in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on Wednesday.

Werner slotted past Hugo Lloris in the 58th minute after Ben Davies had fouled Konrad Laimer, putting the Bundesliga high-flyers in control ahead of the second leg on March 10.

Sportsmail’s Daniel Matthews rated the players at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium on Wednesday night.

Tottenham defender Ben Davies gave away a penalty with a rash challenge on Konrad Laimer

TOTTENHAM (4-2-3-1)

Spurs’ best source of creativity, driving them forward with quick thinking and neat passing.

Gedson Fernandes – 5

Struggled to get into the game. Forced to do a lot of defensive work to limit Angelino’s threat.

Fed off scraps for most of the night but worked hard and created some openings.

Useful outlet with his pace and came close with neat early turn and shot. Faded.

Very limited service but missed two second-half chances including late header.

Ethan Ampadu targets Chelsea homecoming next season as he returns to RB Leipzig line-up to help beat Tottenham in Champions League

  • Ethan Ampadu starred for Leipzig in their 1-0 win at Tottenham on Wednesday
  • His display fuelled rumours that he could make the Chelsea first team next year
  • Ampadu said he wants a return to the Blues after helping Leipzig this season

Ethan Ampadu is keen to resume his Chelsea career next season but only after helping RB Leipzig achieve their goals this campaign.

The Wales defender is on a season-long at the Bundesliga club from Stamford Bridge and after a defensive crisis has found himself finally getting some games.

He started in Leipzig’s 1-0 win at Tottenham in the Champions League last 16 first-leg clash – just the second time he has been named in Julian Nagelsmann’s starting XI.

Ethan Ampadu admits he wants to go back to Chelsea after he has helped Leipzig this season

Youngsters are getting a chance at Chelsea under Frank Lampard and the 19-year-old wants to be part of it next term.

But with Leipzig going for the Bundesliga title and making waves in the Champions League, that is where his focus is at the moment.

‘I am always watching Chelsea and seeing what is going on,’ he said. ‘It is good to see the young players are shining at the moment.

‘They are in the top four so fingers crossed they can hold on to that. I would like to go back, I aim to, but right now I am focused on Leipzig and finishing the season.’

Apart from a couple of shaky moments in the first half Ampadu was part of the Leipzig defence that kept Spurs at bay and earned a clean sheet.

He was proud of his performance and hopes he proved his worth to Nagelsmann.

‘I have not played as much as I would have liked to but I am definitely learning in training and working hard,’ he said.

‘When this situation came of starting tonight I knew it was a good opportunity to show what I can do and I’d like to think I’ve done that.

‘I just tried to play my game. I try to be composed and just try to play.’

Leipzig could have put the tie to bed had they taken their chances at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Instead they only had Timo Werner’s second-half penalty to show for a dominant display.

‘We won the game and played well as a team,’ Ampadu added. ‘That is what we practised for, that is what we prepared for so I am glad it came off.

‘You always want more goals but we have a 1-0 win to go back with. It is only half-time, so we just have to focus on the weekend.

‘(Jose) Mourinho said it, the quality of our play might go under-rated because people might not know the name of Leipzig so much but hopefully people saw that we have a lot of quality.’

‘It makes me very proud’: Timo Werner cannot hide his delight as he addresses transfer links with ‘best team in the world’ Liverpool after scoring winner at Tottenham

RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner has admitted he is ‘proud’ to be linked with ‘the best team in the world’ Liverpool after scoring the winner against Tottenham on Wednesday evening.

The 23-year-old has been a long-time target of Liverpool’s and has been in red-hot form in front of goal this season, scoring 26 times in 32 matches in all competitions.

Werner scored the only goal of the match – a second-half penalty after Ben Davies brought down Konrad Laimer in the box – as Leipzig took control of the Champions League last-16 tie.

Timo Werner admitted it was an honour to be continually linked with a move to Liverpool

Questioned about rumours linking him with Liverpool, Werner said: ‘I know that Liverpool is the best team at the moment in the world and when you are linked with that team it makes me very proud.

‘It’s a pleasure but I know that Liverpool play a lot of good players and I have to improve myself and I need to learn many more things to get to that level and to play there.’

Although Leipzig will undoubtedly be delighted by their victory in the first leg of their tie with Tottenham, the Germans could have easily walked away with a more significant advantage.

The Bundesliga title chasers dominated much of the proceedings with Tottenham only threatening towards the end of the second half as they desperately searched for an equaliser.

But Werner insisted afterwards that the job remains far from done with Jose Mourinho’s side coming to Leipzig for the second leg in three weeks’ time.

He added: ‘Tottenham are a good team and they showed last year that mentally they can come back in these games and we have to do the same like we did today if we want to progress.

‘We have had a good start for the first half of the last-16 clash but we will need to push on.’

REVEALED: RB Leipzig LOST a box of shirts on the way to their Champions League clash with Tottenham… meaning Timo Werner wore a different sponsor to team-mates

  • Leipzig lost a box of matchday shirts as they made their way to face Tottenham
  • It meant Timo Werner and a select few had to wear shirts with different sponsors
  • Werner and Christopher Nkunku wore a full-colour sponsor strip for second half
  • Boss Julian Nagelsmann confirmed the mix-up in his post-match conference
  • Leipzig went on to win the game thanks to a second-half Werner penalty

RB Leipzig were the victims of lost luggage on Wednesday after they arrived at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with a set of incomplete matchday shirts for their Champions League clash against Spurs.

The mix-up left Timo Werner, Lukas Klostermann and Christopher Nkunku wearing Leipzig’s away strip with a monochrome Red Bull sponsor while their team-mates had full-colour branding for the game.

However, after half-time, Werner and Nkunku were able to swap shirts to don the kit with a colourful sponsor while Klostermann kept the black and white sponsor version.

Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann confirmed in his post-match press conference that the club had indeed lost a box of shirts at the airport after touching down in England.

Many fans noticed the discrepancy during the first 45 minutes, where Leipzig ran the hosts ragged.

The German side didn’t relent, though, and were given a penalty after a clumsy foul by Ben Davies inside the box.

Werner stepped up to convert the penalty, wearing the famous red and yellow logo on the front of his shirt.

It was also confirmed on Thursday that Leipzig’s monochrome shirt sponsor is in fact the kit registered with UEFA.

It is the kit Leipzig have worn for previous encounters in the Champions League and will be the strip they will use for future away games in the competition.

‘We’ll see what the summer holds’: Achraf Hakimi open to permanent Borussia Dortmund move and admits future at Real Madrid is uncertain

  • Achraf Hakimi has been sensational for Borussia Dortmund since joining
  • He is on loan from Real Madrid and wants to continue his development at club
  • Hakimi played for Dortmund in their 2-1 win over PSG in Champions League

Achraf Hakimi admitted that his future is up in the air and the full-back could join Borussia Dortmund on a permanent basis from Real Madrid.

The loanee starred for Dortmund in their 2-1 win over PSG in the Champions League on Tuesday night and has been a standout player for the Bundesliga side.

He wants to continue his development and accrue more game time, so accepts that he may not simply return to the Bernabeu this summer.

Achraf Hakimi is open to the possibility of moving to Borussia Dortmund on a permanent deal

‘Everything can happen in June, but we’ll see what the summer holds,’ he said.

‘In my head is that I want to play and I want to continue growing. Here in Germany they are giving me the opportunity.’

The 21-year-old has established himself as a key figure for Lucian Favre since arriving from Real on a two-season loan contract in 2018.

Two goals from Erling Braut Haaland sandwiched either side of a close range finish from Neymar gave Dortmund the win on Tuesday night.

They carry an advantage into the second leg and will be optimistic about their chances, particularly given their new striker’s remarkable form.

‘We have prepared the game quite well and it worked out well,’ Hakimi added. ‘Haaland has helped us a lot and we hope it stays that way.

‘He [Haaland] has been smart. He is still young and knows he has to play.’

Timo Werner is plotting Tottenham’s downfall in the Champions League as Liverpool watch on http://www.footy.to/2020/02/19/timo-werner-is-plotting-tottenhams-downfall-in-the-champions-league-as-liverpool-watch-on/ http://www.footy.to/2020/02/19/timo-werner-is-plotting-tottenhams-downfall-in-the-champions-league-as-liverpool-watch-on/#respond Wed, 19 Feb 2020 17:55:59 +0000 http://www.footy.to/?p=16786

For a brief moment last Saturday afternoon, there were two Timo Werners on the pitch at RB Leipzig’s Red Bull Arena.

One of them was the striker who has scored 26 goals in 35 games for club and country this season, earning him renewed interest from the likes of Liverpool and Bayern Munich.

The other, clinging onto his hand, was a six-year-old mascot who was only slightly shorter than his namesake. So while little Timo Werner faced up to a must-win game against Werder Bremen, even littler Timo Werner trotted off the pitch after the handshakes to find his mum and dad.

Luckily for Leipzig, it was the right Timo Werner who stayed on the pitch, and Julian Nagelsmann’s side eased to a 3-0 to keep the heat on Bayern. But while the Bundesliga chuckled at the story of the striker and the ballboy, Nagelsmann must have been quietly wishing he actually did have two Timo Werners in his squad.

Leipzig face Tottenham on Wednesday night and for Werner it will be more than just an audition for a potential move to the Premier League with Liverpool among those showing interest.

Despite a recent dip in form and no previous experience in the Champions League knockout stages, his team can approach the last-16 clash with a genuine hope of reaching the last-eight. They currently sit just a point behind Bayern in the Bundesliga, and Werner, who will lead the line in North London, is a key reason for their success this season.

His goalscoring record speaks for itself. His 20 goals in the league this term have included two hat-tricks and four braces, and he has also chalked up ten assists in all competitions.

Blessed with searing pace and immaculate finishing, Werner was always well-suited to the smash-and-grab, neo-Teutonic football which Leipzig favoured under Ralf Rangnick and Ralph Hasenhüttl.

Under Nagelsmann, who adds a healthy dash of possession play to the pressing and counter-pressing, he has flourished even more. If Speedy Gonzales-esque counter-attacks remain his trademark, his ability to drift out wide, hang back and create space for his fellow forwards are also key to Leipzig’s attacking play.

Like Bayern’s Robert Lewandowski, he also has a knack of squeezing out deadly shots from tight spots when his side comes up against a parked bus.

His form this year has seen him return to the national team fold after a miserable World Cup in 2018, and also dispelled the last remnants of a bizarre period in which he was one of the most hated players in Germany.

His move to Leipzig, who are widely hated for their Red Bull links, and one outrageous dive against Schalke in 2017 were briefly enough to turn an entire nation against him. For a while, chants of ‘Timo Werner is a son of a b***h’ were par for the course in all German stadiums, even ones where Leipzig weren’t playing.

It is a credit to Werner that he never rose to the unfair treatment, and his straightforward and effective approach to the game has now won him more fans than detractors.

He has also not let transfer speculation affect his form. Though he flirted continuously with a move to Bayern throughout last season, he still fired more than a goal every two games for Leipzig, helping them to Champions League qualification and the German Cup final.

The set-up at Leipzig is perfect for Werner and brings the best out of him in front of goal

The set-up at Leipzig is perfect for Werner and brings the best out of him in front of goal

In the end, it was Nagelsmann who persuaded him to stay on for another year, and Werner signed a new deal keeping him at the club until 2023. For many, it was the sensible choice, and one which Werner should bear in mind as he mulls a move to England or Munich this summer.

‘The system in Leipzig is the best that Timo Werner can get in Germany at the moment. In Munich, it would not be so tailor-made for him,’ former Arsenal and Germany keeper Jens Lehmann told Bild last month.

There is certainly something in that. Werner has always been at his most deadly when he is the focal point of an attack. For Germany in 2018, when he was used as a spare all-rounder to plug a gap out wide, he flopped spectacularly. Under Nagelsmann, where the system is built around him, he has been formidable.

Though it may seem counter-intuitive, that may also mean that Werner does not shine in his audition against Tottenham on Wednesday night. Nagelsmann will no doubt have a specific plan for beating Jose Mourinho’s men, and unless Werner is at the heart of it, he may not hit his finest form.

Werner may not have a defining game against Spurs but he will still interest top European sides

He is also, and will probably always remain, a mood player. When in the zone, Werner is an unstoppable force. Yet despite his record this season, he has gone through a minor goal drought in recent weeks, with no goals in his last five games.

Yet even if Tottenham does not prove to be a career-defining game, Werner will remain on the radar of Europe’s top clubs in the coming months and justifiably so. At Leipzig, they are all but resigned to losing him this summer.

‘If he continues to score goals then it is clear that it won’t just be Bayern who are interested in such a world class player. Timo is not unsellable, we have to be honest about that,’ Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff told Bild last month.

Perhaps the only solution for Mintzlaff and Nagelsmann is to somehow work out a way of having two Timo Werners. That way, they could sell one and keep the other on the pitch, scoring goals in the Bundesliga title race.

Liverpool ‘eye £31.5m summer swoop for Milot Rashica… as club send scouts to watch Werder Bremen midfielder and Timo Werner in action’ in Jurgen Klopp raid on the Bundesliga

  • Werder Bremen midfielder Milot Rashica has caught the eye of Liverpool
  • The 23-year-old has scored seven goals in the Bundesliga so far this season
  • Jurgen Klopp is also interested in Red Bull Leipzig forward Timo Werner
  • Rashica reportedly has a £31.5m release clause should the Reds want to pursue

Liverpool are currently scouting Werder Bremen midfielder Milot Rashica with a view to a £31.5million summer move.

The 23-year-old, who is a Kosovo international, has impressed in the Bundesliga this season, scoring seven goals in 18 league appearances.

Jurgen Klopp is eyeing up the best Bundesliga talent and as well as RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner, Rashica has now emerged as another player being keenly watched by Liverpool’s scouting department, according to German outlet Bild

The report notes that Rashica has a €38m (£31.5m) buyout clause at Werder Bremen, should the Premier League champions-in-waiting want to press ahead with a summer move.

Rashica moved to Bremen from Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem in January 2018, on a contract until 2022.

In 2016, he switched national teams from Albania to Kosovo, and will play a part in next month’s Euro 2020 play-offs.

Meanwhile, RB Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff has insisted that Werner is happy at the club and is focused on the rest of the season despite constant speculation linking him with a move to Liverpool.

Werner currently has a £51million release clause in his contract at Leipzig but that is set to expire in April and could force the European champions into making a move soon.

‘Someone makes something up, and everyone else copies it. Werner is happy here and wants to play the rest of the season.’

Despite his impressive record, according to SportBild, the Bundesliga champions are reluctant to open contract talks until the end of the season.

The same publication reports that a strong showing against Chelsea in the Champions League, though, could force the club’s hand in bringing discussions forward to April.

Flick’s record has caught the attentions of other sides, who are aware he may be available in the summer should Bayern choose to look elsewhere.

‘He’s always on the half turn, he’s not squared up looking at his own goal. He’s really pacey. He’s got that sixth sense that all the top strikers have,’ Souness told Virgin Media.

‘He’s in the right place at the right time. He looks like he’s quicker than anyone, he’s bigger than anyone.

‘He’s got a great chance of being a top man, hasn’t he?

‘His mother must have been a good player because his dad was a plodder.’

Haaland, who joined Dormtund in a £17million move from RB Salzburg this winter, is the son of former Leeds and Manchester City player Alf-Inge.
