Ajax and Feyenoord will know where they stand in Europe this afternoon. From noon the draw for the third heat of both the Champions League and Europa League is in Nyon.
PSV, in turn, knows the next opponent in the Champions League, if two matches are settled with FC Basel. The Europa League will also continue to draw, but more on that later.
As a champion, Ajax has to survive no less than two qualifying rounds to participate in the main tournament. Due to the poor performance in the European tournaments, the Netherlands has fallen considerably in recent years in the UEFA ranking.
The many points that Ajax gained with the semi-final place of last season will only be included in the distribution of the European places for next year. Then the champion of the Netherlands will probably no longer have to play preliminary rounds. Only if the winner of the Champions League does not qualify through the regular competition, will there be any barrage matches.
Ajax does have a placed status, which means it avoids the strongest clubs in the preliminary rounds on paper. Because the Amsterdammers walk the so-called Champions Path, they have to beat two champions from the smaller European football countries to reach the group stage.
