Conor Gallagher ‘has a better chance of going to Qatar’ if he signs for Crystal Palace, insists Ally McCoist… as he urges the England midfielder to quit Chelsea to rescue his World Cup dream
Conor Gallagher needs to leave Chelsea and join Crystal Palace for the sake of his World Cup hopes, according to Ally McCoist.
The 22-year-old enjoyed a successful loan spell at Selhurst Park last season, during which time he made his senior England debut.
He is now back at Chelsea, but there are fears that he might lose his spot in Gareth Southgate’s squad if he remains at Stamford Bridge.
Conor Gallagher has featured in all four of Chelsea’s Premier League games so far this season
Gallagher has featured in all four of the Blues’ Premier League games so far this season but has only started twice.
He was sent off in their 2-1 win over Leicester last weekend after receiving two yellow cards in the first 28 minutes.
‘He’s got to think about himself, his future,’ McCoist said on talkSPORT. ‘He had a brilliant period at Palace, he had a top class time there. Clearly Patrick Vieira would take him back in two minutes.
‘Will he play consistently in that Chelsea team? Will he play consistently enough to get in the squad for Qatar? I’m not too sure to be honest with you.
But Ally McCoist thinks Gallagher has more chance of going to Qatar if he joins Crystal Palace
The 22-year-old enjoyed a successful loan spell at Selhurst Park last term, scoring eight goals
‘I think he’s probably got a better chance of going to Qatar if he plays with Palace. I can see him being a mainstay in that side, whereas I’m not sure he will be at Chelsea.
‘So it’s a big decision he’s got to make. From where he was three or four years ago, it’s a brilliant decision for him to make because he’s just done ever so well with his career in the last couple of seasons.
‘I think he’s only going to continue to improve because I think he’s an excellent player. Going forward, he’s brave, gets himself into scoring positions.’
Gallagher contributed eight goals and three assists in 34 Premier League appearances for Palace last season.

He was voted the club’s Player of the Year at the end of the campaign after flourishing under Vieira.
The 22-year-old has won four England caps to date after making his debut against San Marino in November 2021.
As many as nine clubs are interested in signing him before Thursday’s transfer deadline, but Chelsea are yet to receive a concrete offer.
Palace are one of the teams monitoring Gallagher’s situation, while Newcastle and Everton are also keen.
