Real Madrid ‘set to give Modric a new one-year contract’ – but the Croatian wants to stay for longer

Real Madrid ‘set to offer Luka Modric a new one-year contract’ with his current deal running out next summer – despite the Croatian stating in his autobiography that he would like to stay at the club for longer

  • Modric has won two LaLiga titles and four Champions Leagues since 2014
  • Real Madrid feel they can only offer the 35-year-old one more year due to his age
  • The Croatian wants to become a coach once his playing days come to an end

Real Madrid are reportedly set to offer Luka Modric a new one-year contract, despite the Croatian wanting to stay at the Bernabeu for longer.

The 35-year-old made a telling contribution last season as Real won their first LaLiga title in three years and having started three of the club’s first four league games this campaign, it seems Modric is still firmly in Zinedine Zidane’s plans for one more term at least.

Modric’s current deal runs out in June 2021 and he stated in his autobiography, released earlier this summer, that he feels he has at least two more years left in him at the club he has called home since 2012.

Luka Modric has made 347 appearances for Real Madrid and is still in Zinedine Zidane’s plans

‘I’m certain that I can play at a high level for two more years, then we shall see,’ he said. ‘I would like to end my career at Real Madrid, but it will also depend on the club. Of course, I will then do the course to become a coach.’

In March this year, it was reported by Mundo Deportivo that Modric could have been allowed to leave at the end of the 2019-20 season, with the prospect of him putting pen to paper on a new deal seeming bleak.

However, Diario Sport now reports that the situation has changed, but that he will only be contracted to play on for Los Blancos until the summer of 2022 due to his age.

Modric joined Real from Tottenham in 2012 and has made 347 appearances for the club, scoring 22 goals.

Along with two LaLiga crowns, he has won four Champions Leagues, three UEFA Super Cups, three Club World Cups, three Supercopas de Espana and one Copa del Rey during his time in Spain, as well as winning the Ballon d’or in 2018.
