Mesut Ozil left out of Arsenal’s squad for trip to Olympiacos with his wife due to give birth

Arsenal bring Matteo Guendouzi back in from the cold for Europa League trip to Olympiacos after being dropped for Newcastle win due to attitude problem as Mesut Ozil stays behind with wife Amine Gulse due to give birth

  • Matteo Guendouzi has been named in the Arsenal squad to face Olympiacos
  • The French midfielder had been left out entirely for the victory over Newcastle
  • Mesut Ozil will also miss the trip as he waits on the birth of his first child

Matteo Guendouzi is part of Arsenal’s travelling party for their Europa League last-32 tie against Olympiacos after being axed from Mikel Arteta’s squad for Sunday’s 4-0 win over Newcastle.

The French midfielder paid the price for angering Arteta with his attitude during Arsenal’s winter break training camp in Dubai.

Explaining his omission, Arteta said: ‘The reason is that players who, in my opinion, are training better, behaving better and are more applied to deliver on the pitch, what we want, are the players selected.’

Matteo Guendouzi has been restored to the Arsenal squad for their clash with Olympiacos

But Guendouzi has done enough to earn a return to Arteta’s squad for Thursday’s clash against the Greek league leaders.

Arsenal will be without Mesut Ozil, who will miss the trip as he is about to become a father.

Ozil, who has sat out all of Arsenal’s European away games this season, has stayed behind in London this time due to personal reasons, with his wife Amine Gulse, who he married in June, close to giving birth.

Midfielder Lucas Torreira also did not board Arsenal’s flight to Greece due to illness though he will be assessed over the next 24 hours and could travel separately in time for the game if his condition improves.

Lucas Torreira is another midfielder not making the trip due to illness, although he could fly out on Thursday should he recover in time.

Arsenal face Olympiacos at the Karaiskakis Stadium at 8pm on Thursday night. It is the first time that Mikel Arteta will take charge of the side in European competition.

The Gunners reached the final of last season’s competition but were beaten 4-1 by Chelsea in Baku.
